Nine Arch Bridge – Ella, Sri Lanka
Location:
The Nine Arch Bridge is located between Ella and Demodara in the Badulla District of Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. It's nestled in a lush, hilly area surrounded by tea plantations and dense jungle.
History and Architecture:
- Built during: British colonial period (around 1921)
- Material: Constructed using bricks, rocks, and cement no steel which is rare for a bridge of its size.
- Designer: Sri Lankan engineer D.J. Wimalasurendra with construction assistance from local builders and British engineers.
- Length: Approximately 91 meters (300 ft)
- Height: About 24 meters (80 ft)
- Arches: 9 elegant stone arches—hence the name "Nine Arch Bridge"
Why It’s Famous:
- Scenic Beauty: Surrounded by misty hills and greenery, the bridge is a top photography and tourist spot.
- Train Crossings Watching a train cross the bridge, especially with early morning mist or sunset light, is a highlight for many visitors.

Fun Fact:
Local legends say when steel imports were delayed during World War I, the builders used only stone and cement to complete the bridge—making it an engineering marvel of its time.
